Why Chimney Cleaning & Sweeping Matters in Brevard County

Burning wood can produce soot and creosote deposits inside the chimney. The amount and type of buildup can vary depending on fireplace use, burning practices, wood selection, and chimney conditions.

Regular inspection helps determine when chimney cleaning or sweeping is needed and can identify deposits or conditions that may require attention.

SOOT BUILDUP

HEAVY CREOSOTE BUILDUP

GLAZED CREOSOTE

Soot is a soft, powdery residue produced by wood combustion. Buildup inside the flue can indicate that chimney cleaning is needed.

Creosote can accumulate in thicker deposits inside the chimney flue. Heavy buildup should be removed to help reduce the risk of a chimney fire.

Glazed creosote is a hard, shiny, tar-like deposit that can be difficult to remove and presents a serious chimney fire hazard.

CHIMNEY SAFETY

When Does a Chimney Need Cleaning or Sweeping?

The Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) recommends that chimneys, fireplaces, and vents be inspected at least once a year. Cleaning should be performed as needed based on the condition of the chimney and the amount and type of deposits present.

For masonry fireplaces, CSIA recommends sweeping when approximately 1/8 inch of sooty buildup is present — and sooner if glazed creosote is found. Factory-built fireplaces should be swept when any appreciable buildup is present.
